Use of bitter apple spray or Listerine with water in a spray bottle?
Came arose this answer in stopping a dog mouthing problem. Sounds like a possible idea that I can use, but just wanna see other opinion on this method…
Listerine is not something that should be consumed. Even people are supposed to spit it out and not swallow it! The bitter apple spray could work. I saw their answer and the idea is a good one.
You can also try Citronella Spray. It’s totally harmless… dogs just HATE the smell. We use it at the PetSmart PetsHotel to deter dogs in play group that are showing mild-moderate aggression toward one another. It works every time! Spray it right at his face. The smell will stick to the fur on his nose for a while and he’ll calm down or try to get it off. He’ll stop mouthing though!
I really am a huge proponent of taking away attention when they’re doing something you don’t like though. It works the best for the dogs I’ve owned. My first dog was a Husky and he had mouthing problems. We didn’t know any better back then aka weren’t prepared for a dog… so we hit him on the nose with newspaper. After about a month he finally got it but as soon as he got excited again, he would mouth and bite. He wouldn’t stop until he saw the paper in our hand.
Giving something negative in exchange for unwanted behavior doesn’t usually solve the problem, it just gives you a way to stop it when the dog is doing it. If you really want the dog to never do it, withdraw your attention. Dogs are pack animals and thus social. They’ll do anything to keep your attention so by removing it the dog learns REALLY fast how to keep it.
